Info | Hinrich has lived in Chester Basin since he moved to Canada in 1982. He was born in Germany and received his medical degree there at Kiel University. He worked in Germany, Sweden, England and the US as a liver/kidney transplant surgeon until he came to Nova Scotia to start Atlantic Canada's first liver transplant program. He also established the Transplant Research Laboratory at Dalhousie University. His special interest is dialysis-related surgery.
His work has given him an insight into the health care needs of all Nova Scotians. Because most of his dialysis patients are seniors, he has developed a deep understanding of the issues facing older people.
His political career began in the 1990's when he joined a group of residents opposed to the government plan to dump toxic soil off the Windsor Road. Since then, he has spoken up on other local environmental issues such as the ill-advised establishment of aquaculture operations off Southwest-North West Coves and the threat of clear-cutting around Kaizer Meadow. In recent months, he has added his voice to those who object to the Hamm government's plan to de-list the Blandford Game Sanctuary.
He was first elected to the Legislature in 1998. In the 2003 campaign he lost by a mere 39 votes to the late John Chataway.
He is a member of the Aenon Baptist Church in Chester Basin and was for many years a member of the Chester Basin Volunteer Fire Department. He will continue to work at the QEII on a part-time basis until June 2006. Hinrich has 6 children.
