Info | John F. Russo, Jr. was elected to the Dover Township Committee on November 7, 2000, and sworn into office on January 1, 2001. John ran on a platform of curbing residential over development, dealing with the traffic congestion problems and insuring that the quality of life issues are addressed here in Dover Township.
After growing up in Dover Township, and attending Toms River Public Schools, Kindergarten through 12th Grade, Committeeman John F. Russo, Jr. earned a wealth of real-life experience. he worked as a carpenter initially, and then as a businessman in Toms River. John founded, built and managed a successful home building company where he experienced both the good and the bad economic times.
Despite enjoying success in business, John returned to the classroom, in his thirties, to earn his law degree. He first earned his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University, graduating with honors in 1994 before taking J.D. from the Seton Hall School of Law in 1997. He founded and now operates a Toms River law firm, Russo & Cassidy, LLC.
John's wife Karen is a teacher in the Toms River school system and they are raising three sons, JT age 12, Justin age 10, and Jake 5 years old. John and Karen's youngest son Jake was born with Down's Syndrome, and as a result John and Karen have a particular interest in helping handicapped children and their families in the community. John also serves on the Board of directors of The ARC, Ocean County Chapter, an Association Representing People with Special Needs.
As Mayor, John hopes to focus on the implementation of the Open Space preservation program and establish a sensible development plan, which begins to address the very real problems of residential over-development and the need for a balance with commercial ratables to keep the tax rate truly stable. He also is working as the Township's advocate on improving the Township's roadway and infrastructure problems at both the State and County levels.
Perhaps John's own words best sum up his governing philosophy: "At the end of the day this is my home town, the only one I have ever known. I want to put all my efforts into ensuring that when my children grow up they will, not only want to stay here, but will be able to stay here and raise families of their own."
