Description |
First time the Mayor of Dover Township (better known as Toms River) is being popularly elected. Current mayor (and party switcher) John F. Russo sought a new term as a Republican. He is was challenged by two Democrats -- one running as an independent candidate. Matchup polling showed Mayor Russo leading both candidates in a one-on-one matchup.
Democrat Furey, suffering from scandal, dropped out of the race when he realized he could not win. That threw the race to Independent candidate Brush, running on his own "YES" slate.
Voters here, however, gave Republicans complete 7 - 0 control of the Town Council in a new "ward" system. Democrats had won control of the council in 2002.
