Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Renfrewshire East takes in several middle-class commuter towns in the far south of the Glasgow conurbation, as well as a large rural area to the south and west. Overall, it is well-educated and the vast majority of the workforce is employed in non-manual positions, while Barrhead has a more traditional working class character.
The area is also home to number of reservoirs, Rouken Glen, and the new Dams to Darnley Country Park. Whitelee Wind Farm, when completed in 2009, was Europe's largest onshore wind farm. The constituency was one of only three in Scotland to be untouched by the 2005 boundary review.
Once considered safe Conservative territory, Scottish Labour leader and former UK cabinet member Jim Murphy won it for his party that year. He held the seat in 2010 with a majority of 10,420 votes. |
