Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Located to the south of Liverpool is the seat of Garston and Halewood. A socially diverse constituency, it combines well-heeled residential areas such as Allerton and Woolton - the childhood home of John Lennon - with large ex-council estates like Speke.
The seat is bounded by the River Mersey, the M62 and Green Belt land beyond Halewood. Garston is a major shipping and container port, while Halewood is home to the Land Rover Assembly plant. One in four of the population lives in social housing; one in 20 has never worked, according to ONS 2011 Census figures for England and Wales. At 76.5%, it has the 13th highest proportion of people describing themselves as Christian. One in four works in retail and manufacturing.
A Labour seat since 1983, the party's Maria Eagle held the seat in 2010 with 59.5% of the votes; Liberal Democrats got 20.1%, Conservative 16.1% and UKIP 3.6%. |
