Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
While the Orkney Islands are seven miles from the Scottish mainland, the Shetlands are closer to Norway than they are to England - one factor which has fuelled debate over more devolution to the northern isles. Farming and fishing remain important to the region, which has seen great benefits from North Sea oil including terminal facilities at Flotta and Sullom Voe, the latter supporting Shetland's oil fund.
BP's Clair Field, west of Shetland, is the largest known source of oil on the UK continental shelf, while Orkney has become a major centre for renewable energy. Tourist attractions include the pre-historic Orkney village of Skara Brae and Shetland's Jarlshof prehistoric and Norse settlement.
The constituency was represented by former Liberal Party leader Jo Grimond between 1950 and 1983, followed by Lib Dem veteran Jim Wallace. The party's Alistair Carmichael, the current Scottish secretary, has held Orkney and Shetland since 2001. |
