Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
The industrial community of New Lanark was founded in 1785 by Robert Owen, the most successful cotton-mill entrepreneur of his day. The area boomed, but by the 1930s, it began to suffer as factories and mills closed all over the Clyde Valley.
Today the cotton and coal industries survive as heritage sites, with New Lanark a major tourist attraction. The area's close proximity to Glasgow has transformed it into a modern commuter base for professionals. The Lanark and Hamilton East constituency, a narrow urban strip running south-west from the Glasgow suburbs and along the north boundary of the South Lanarkshire council area, also takes in the towns of Biggar and Larkhall. Hamilton Park Racecourse and Summerlee Raceway also attract day-trippers to the constituency. The seat has a Labour-voting background and was held by the party's Jimmy Hood in 2010 with a majority of 13,478 votes. |
