Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
North east Glasgow's imposing Red Road flats were once a beacon of 1960s urban regeneration, but in time became landmarks of deprivation in one of the Britain's poorest corners. Springburn, once the heart of Scotland's railway production industry, was decimated by the dawn of diesel and the housing, shops and schools created by the once great rail companies began to crumble.
The gleaming North Glasgow College campus has become a symbol of efforts to regenerate the constituency, which extends out towards East Dunbartonshire, while Dennistoun has attracted young professionals and students.
The 2009 Glasgow north east by-election was sparked by local MP Michael Martin's resignation as House of Commons speaker, after his handling of the Westminster expenses scandal. Voters returned a Labour MP - Willie Bain - as they had done historically, but the 33% turnout was the lowest for any Scottish by-election. |
