Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Taking up a large swathe of south Ayrshire in the west of Scotland, the diverse Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock seat is both a former mining area and the birthplace of local Alloway lad and baird Robert Burns. The town of Cumnock is a focal point for the ex-mining villages of the Doon and Afton Valleys, while Ayr, a port town on the Firth of Clyde, is an important commercial centre.
Ayr is a tourist destination and home to one of the country's premier horse racing venues, while nearby Prestwick Airport provides jobs for a number of local residents. The Conservatives have done well at local and Scottish elections in parts of this seat, although Labour has been the dominant Westminster force.
The party's Sandra Osborne held the seat in 2010 by 9,911 votes, while there was a small swing from Labour to the Tories. |
