Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
The UK's largest constituency, Ross, Skye and Lochaber, covers two million acres of some of the most stunning scenery to be found anywhere in the world. The Highland seat takes in the UK's tallest peak, Ben Nevis, as well as Glencoe, scene of the infamous 1692 massacre, and the mystical isle of Skye. Fort William, on the west coast, is key to the area's tourism industry.
The steam train between there and Mallaig - better known as the Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter films - is popular with visitors. The town of Dingwall, to the north of Inverness, is home to Ross County football club, and the area also relies on the crofting, salmon and whisky industries.
Former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy was first elected an MP in the area in 1983, when he was 23, and held the seat in 2010 with a majority of 13,070 votes. |
