Description | BBC Constituency Profile:
Situated on the south coast of England is the East Sussex seat of Eastbourne. The constituency consists almost entirely of this elegant Victorian seaside resort, along with villages such as Friston and East Dean, and the spectacular headland of Beachy Head. The town's historic pier is undergoing restoration after it was partly destroyed by fire in July 2014.
Aside from tourists, the seat is a magnet for English language students and retirees. Almost one in four of the population is a pensioner - the 34th highest proportion of all constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures.
Eastbourne's Conservative MP Ian Gow was killed by an IRA car bomb in July 1990. The Liberal Democrats won the subsequent by-election, but lost the seat in 1992. In 2010, Liberal Democrat Stephen Lloyd seized it back with 47.3% of the votes; Conservatives got 40.7%, Labour 4.8% and Independent 2.5%. |
