DescriptionBBC Profile:
This new constituency incorporates parts of the Labour-held Barnsley West and Penistone and Sheffield Hillsborough constituencies.

Barnsley West and Penistone was represented by former miner Michael Clapham from 1992. In the last general election, he was returned with more than 55% of the vote and a majority of 11,314.

In Sheffield Hillsborough, Angela Smith became the Labour MP in 2005 with a similar five-figure majority. She is the Labour Party candidate for Penistone and Stockbridge.

The constituency covers a similar area to the historic Penistone constituency with the western wards of Barnsley (Penistone and Dodworth) now combining with the northern wards of the old Sheffield Hillsborough constituency (Stocksbridge and Ecclesfield). To find out what might have happened had these boundary changes been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Stretching from the northern edge of Sheffield, this semi-rural South Yorkshire seat includes a number of towns and a large area of Pennine moorland. Most of the prosperity is in the west, with more deprivation to the east, while the Sheffield wards are largely suburban.

The traditional industries of coal mining and steel-making have declined, and the local economy is now more diversified. Engineering and pipe-making continue, but service industries are expanding. Farming and business in the market town of Penistone are also important to the rural areas.
