Description | BBC Profile:
This seat was created in 1997 from parts of the Boothferry seat held by the Conservative David Davis and most of the equally Conservative seat of Beverley, albeit without the town itself.
Notional 1992 results gave Mr Davis and the Tories a majority of more than 17,000 to defend in Haltemprice and Howden. But in 1997 their vote fell by 15%. In 2001 the Liberal Democrats squeezed the Labour vote to cut Mr Davis majority to less than 2,000. But he increased his majority to 5,116 in 2005.
David Davis caused controversy when he resigned his seat in June 2008 over the issue of 42-day detention for terrorist suspects. In the subsequent by-election, he defended his seat against 25 rival candidates, but neither Labour nor the Lib Dems contested the election. Mr Davis was returned with a 15,355 majority.
Minor boundary changes at this election involve a couple of villages being traded with Beverley and Holderness. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This part suburban, part rural East Yorkshire constituency stretches from the western edge of Hull through a number of small towns to Howden.
The local authority district of Haltemprice was abolished in 1974, but the name, from a defunct 14th Century priory, is used to describe the smart northern and western suburbs of Hull. Most of the population of the constituency is in these areas, which include Cottingham, Kirk Ella and Willerby.
Howden is a small town on the M62 which is growing in prosperity and is now the home of the Press Association.
The biggest single local employer is BAE Systems military aircraft factory at Brough on the Humber.
