Description | BBC Profile:
The Conservatives won this seat after its creation in 1983 but it was subsequently taken by Labour's David Borrow at the 1997 election. His majority has since been reduced by the Conservatives and currently stands at 2,184.
At this election, the seat has gained two wards from the Chorley district and lost the wards of Farington East and Farington West and the part-wards of Bamber Bridge West, Lostock Hall and Tardy Gate to Ribble Valley. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
South Ribble lies south west of Lancashire covering the districts of Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancashire. Leyland, famed for the bus and truck manufacturer, is the largest town in the district with a population of 40,000.
Leyland trucks are a vital employer in the area. The company has become a global business in recent years and is now owned by the American firm PACCAR.
