DescriptionBBC Profile:
The seat was created in 1974 and has been held since by Labour. Tony Lloyd, who has been MP since 1997 since moving from the Stretford seat, won a majority of 9,776 in 2005, after a 9.8% swing to the Liberal Democrats.

At the election, the seat gains the part-wards of Ardwick and Moss Side from Manchester Gorton and a ward and a part-ward from Blackley and Broughton. It loses a part-ward to Blackley and Broughton and Manchester Withington and three part-wards to Manchester Gorton. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This seat includes the commercial, retail and business core of the city. It also includes Manchester University, Boddington's brewery, Granada television studios and Chinatown, as well as many newly developed city-centre apartment buildings.

The elegant and expanding city centre is surrounded on all sides by a belt of inner-city residential areas.

The seat has a diverse ethnic makeup and is home to large Indian, Pakistani and West Indian communities, together with an African community, mainly from west Africa, but also in recent years from Somalia.

The city itself is a centre of banking and has a major manufacturing base that employs nearly 300,000 people in the area. Some 14bn annually is invested in plant, machinery and buildings.

The Central division includes much of the commercial, business and retail core of the city that was hit by an IRA bomb in June 1996. The subsequent re-building of the city centre is one of the centrepieces of the post-industrial regeneration that has been going on for over a decade.
