Description | BBC Profile:
For several decades after World War II, Blackpool South was a Conservative seat. However, it fell to Labour in their general election of 1997 when Gordon Marsden was elected MP. He has held onto the seat ever since.
At the election, the seat gains the part-ward of Brunswick from the old Blackpool North and Fleetwood seat, and loses the wards of Layton and Park to Blackpool North and Cleveleys.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Blackpool is a traditional seaside holiday resort and all of the main tourist attractions - piers, tower, pleasure beach and also Blackpool Airport - fall in the Blackpool South constituency.
The success of the tourist industry is essential for the local economy. Although it has declined since its heyday, Blackpool has adapted well and now caters for many weekend holidaymakers on short breaks on England's coastline rather than longer-term visitors, as previously.
Many people are employed in hotels, shops, restaurants and other facilities that are aimed at visitors.
The population is mostly white British, with about a quarter of people aged over 60.
