Description | BBC Profile:
The constituency swung between the three main parties until the Liberal Democrats, represented by Paul Tyler, secured the seat in 1992.
Mr Tyler held the seat for three terms, increasing his majority to 9,832 in 2001. He stood down in 2005 and his successor, Dan Rogerson, emerged with a reduced majority of 3,000.
Boundary changes shift the wards of Edgcumbe North, Edgcumbe South, Gannel, Rialton, Rock, St Columb and St Enoder to St Austell and Newquay, while the seat will gain Stokeclimsland from South East Cornwall. To find out what might have happened had these boundary changes been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The key towns in North Cornwall are Launceston, Wadebridge, and Bodmin and the seaside town of Bude. Although this part of Cornwall is particularly famous for tourism, the constituency also has an above average number of people involved in farming and agriculture.
Between 2000 and 2006, the county received 330m from the European Union after being designated as one of the poorest parts of the EU.
The population profile of this constituency is similar to the rest of Cornwall, in that there is a heavy demographic bias towards the over-65s, with over a quarter more retired people here than the national average.
