Description | BBC Profile:
Wellingborough returned a Labour candidate Paul Stinchcombe with a majority of just 187 in the 1997 general election. At the 2001 general election, Stinchcombe boosted his majority to 2,355, but in 2005 Peter Bone won the seat for the Conservatives by 687 votes.
At the election, boundary changes have a minimal effect on the seat, but mean that it loses Earls Barton, and West, to Daventry. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Essentially made up of the three Northamptonshire towns of Wellingborough, Rushden and Higham Ferrers, the constituency of Wellingborough has prospered in recent years with an improvement to road and rail links, and has diversified from traditional industries.
The town of Wellingborough is situated east of Northampton and north of Bedford.
Although just over 20% of constituents work in the manufacturing industry, the industrial base has expanded into more diverse light and service industries, such as distribution, with development such as the growth of the Park Farm estate.
Farming is also important in the rural parts of the seat, while good rail links to London also serve a healthy population of commuters. Logistics company Kuehne & Nagel took over the running of catering giant Whitbread's food distribution, and opened a new site in the town in May 2008. A massive distribution centre due to open in July 2008 will bring 340 new jobs to the town.
