Leicester East had been a Labour seat for decades until the sitting MP Tom Bradley defected to the Social Democrat Party on its creation in 1981. He may have come third when he fought the seat for his new party two years later at the general election, but the split vote gave victory to Conservative Peter Bruinvels.
In 1987 Keith Vaz regained the seat for Labour and has held it ever since. In 2005 his majority was 15,876 votes.
At the election, boundary changes are minimal and relate to two wards that overlap the seat and Leiceter West. Latimer ward is now entirely within Leicester East, while Abbey ward has moved to the western division. Hosiery, textiles, knitwear and engineering are the biggest industries in the constituency. Around 50% of the workforce is a skilled or partly skilled manual worker. Some 30% work in the manufacturing industry. Fewer than 20% of workers are in managerial, professional and skilled technical jobs.
