Description | BBC Profile:
Labour and the Conservatives had alternating success here in the decades following the Second World War when the seat was known as South East Derbyshire. Its current incarnation as Erewash dates from 1970, when Peter Rost took the seat for the Conservatives.
Mr Rost held the seat for more than 20 years, often winning more than half the vote, until he retired in 1992, when Angela Knight held the seat for the Conservatives.
Current MP Elizabeth Blackman won the seat for Labour in 1997. In 2005 her majority was 7,084 votes. At that election Robert Kilroy-Silk's Veritas party took 5.8% of the vote.
At the election, boundary changes see two wards in the west of the constituency move into the new Mid Derbyshire constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The constituency of Erewash lies between Nottingham and Derby, bounded by the Trent, Derwent and Erewash rivers and split down the middle by the M1.
The seat's name derives from the river that marks its boundary with Nottinghamshire. Population is concentrated in market towns along the eastern edge of the constituency, with open country and many villages to the west.
The local economy was traditionally dominated by lace-making, coal mining, iron working and the textile industry. The mines have long since closed, and the manufacturing base has diversified.
Manufacturing continues to be the dominant source of employment.
Areas of employment growth include engineering, furniture making, packaging, electronics and distribution.
