DescriptionBBC Profile:
The seat was represented from 1955, when the seat was known as Chigwell, by Conservative Sir John Biggs-Davison until his death in 1988. He regularly attracted more than a 50% share of the vote.

He was replaced by businessman Steven Norris, who held the seat until he stepped down in 1997, contesting the London mayoral election in 2000. He was replaced by current MP, Scottish barrister Eleanor Laing, who polled 53% of the vote in 2005.

At the election there are minor boundary changes to this seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Stretching from the edge of Greater London into the rural tranquillity of Epping Forest, this constituency centres on the commuter towns of Loughton, Chigwell and Waltham Abbey, along with a scattering of rural towns and villages to the north.

Population is concentrated in areas where there are good transport links to London, and apart from the towns and larger villages the district lies entirely within the metropolitan green belt. The M11 and the M25 bisect the constituency and the Undergrounds Central Line extends to Epping.

Managerial, professional and associate professional and technical staff comprises approximately half of the working population.
