DescriptionBBC Profile:
In the 1997 general election, current Conservative MP David Lidingtons vote dropped below 50% for the first time since 1979, but he still retained a majority of 8,419.

Labour made small gains again in 2001, but the Conservatives polled an increased majority of 10,009.

In 2005 the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats both increased their share of the vote slightly while the Labour share of the vote fell by 5%. The Conservatives retained a majority of 21.5%.

At the election, boundary changes mean the seat loses Great Missenden, Prestwood and Heath End and part of the Ballinger, South Heath and Chartridge ward to Chesham and Amersham. It loses Icknield and The Risboroughs to Buckingham, and part of Hambleden Valley to Wycombe. Gains include parts of Coldharbour; Elmhurst and Watermead; and Quarrendon. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

As well as the urban centre of Aylesbury, this relatively rural seat in the Buckinghamshire countryside includes small outlying towns and villages such as Aston Clinton, Stokenchurch and Wendover. The prime ministers country residence at Chequers is also here.

The public sector is a significant source of employment: Stoke Mandeville Hospital is the largest employer in the constituency, and the headquarters of both the Buckinghamshire County Council and Aylesbury Vale District Councils are in Aylesbury.
