Description | BBC Profile:
The Conservatives held the seat from 1945 to 1997. Former MPs include the former prime minister Sir Anthony Eden. Current MP James Plaskitt won the seat for Labour in 1997. His majority at the 2005 general election was 266 votes.
Boundary changes mean the new seat will remain much the same. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The Warwick and Leamington constituency is situated to the south east of Birmingham and includes the towns of Warwick and Leamington Spa, as well as surrounding villages.
The constituency dates back to 1885 when it replaced the earlier Warwickshire seat, since when it has contracted to become a more urban seat, dominated by the two towns that give it its name.
On the whole Warwick and Leamington is a prosperous constituency.
Leamington has benefited from the presence of saline springs in the area. Their discovery transformed what was then a small village to a popular resort with both tourists and convalescents wishing to take the waters.
Light industry later eclipsed tourism as the towns mainstay with transport and communications being the two prominent industries. Warwick still preserves its medieval core, surrounded by the open spaces of the common and racecourse, the grounds of the Priory, St Nicholas Meadow and the river Avon.
Currently companies such as Conoco, Volvo Trucks, IBM and Calor Gas all have a presence in the constituency. Warwick and Leamington has a more diverse economy than some of its neighbours. Specialist and games software and research and design are all important sectors in the areas economy.
