Description | BBC Profile:
Only three MPs have represented Pontypridd since 1945, all for the Labour Party.
Kim Howells was first elected at the by-election in 1989 following the death of Brynmor John, who had represented the seat since 1970. Dr Howells has retained the seat at every election since, obtaining a 13,191 majority in 2005.
At this election, a large number of electors have been removed from Pontypridd. Voters from the Pentyrch and Creigiau/St Fagans electoral divisions are transferred to Cardiff West. The Cilfynydd and Glyncoch electoral divisions are moved from this seat into Cynon Valley. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Based around the market town of Pontypridd, the constituency includes former mining villages on the periphery of the valleys towards the outskirts of Cardiff.
Pontypridd and Tonyrefail in the north are old mining and commercial towns. Many commute further down the valley to the industrial estate areas such as Treforest.
The Royal Mint is also located here at Llantrisant and provides employment for the area as does the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
There is also a sizeable number of commuters to Cardiff, and a notable student population due to the large University of Glamorgan campus at Treforest.
