DescriptionBBC Profile:
Sir Ray Powell was the Labour MP for this former mining seat from the 1979 general election until his death in December 2001.

In the resulting by-election in February 2002 Huw Irranca-Davies retained the seat for Labour and did so again, with an increased majority, at the 2005 general election.

At this election, the Aberkenfig and Cefn Cribwr electoral divisions are transferred from Bridgend to Ogmore. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This is a typical former mining valley seat, named after the River Ogmore and embracing three valleys: the Ogmore, the Garw and the Llynfi to the north of Bridgend.

The largest towns are Maesteg and Pencoed. Maesteg was once a metalworking town but it is now primarily a dormitory town.

Employment is varied and mainly based along the M4 corridor in the major industrial parks. Businesses range from telecommunications and assembly work to call centres. The manufacturing base is still relatively buoyant. Agriculture is fairly limited, largely limited to hill farming.

The Dragon International Film Studio complex is based at Llanilid, between Pencoed and Llanharan. The first film at the studios, Ironclad, began filming in late 2009.
