Description | BBC Profile:
The new seat is co-terminus with the area covered by the old Aberconwy Borough Council.
Sir Wyn Roberts, now Lord Roberts, held the old Conwy seat for the Conservatives for 27 years until 1997 when the constituency was lost to Labour. Betty Williams won with a majority of 1,596, which she increased to over 6,000 in 2001.
The partial Tory recovery in Wales halved Betty Williams' lead in the 2005 general election to 3,081.
This is one of the newly-created constituencies. Centred on Llandudno and Conwy town, the seat is based on the old Conwy constituency, but without Bangor, which is now within Arfon's boundaries. In addition, Aberconwy has gained the Conwy County wards of the old Meirionnydd Nant Conwy seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The economy is largely dependent on tourism, agriculture and the public sector, with a new Assembly Government building under construction in Llandudno Junction.
Conwy castle, constructed in the 1280s by Edward I, dominates its town. Conwy also has town walls of over three quarters of a mile in length and built with 22 towers. This circuit is one of the finest remaining in Europe.
