Description | BBC Profile:
Ramsay Macdonald, the first Labour Prime Minister, held the seat between 1922 and 1929. His successor MPs in the seat have all been Labour representatives.
In 1997 sitting Labour MP Sir John Morris, now Lord Morris of Aberavon, achieved 71.3% of the vote and, although this declined in 2001, Dr Hywel Francis was still returned as the first new MP for Aberavon for over 40 years.
In the national swing from Labour to the Liberal Democrats in 2005 his majority marginally declined.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
The constituency is dominated by the town of Port Talbot. The constituency is bordered by the Bristol Channel to the south and is situated just to the east of Swansea Bay.
This is a firmly industrial constituency. The dramatic towers of the steel works dominate the skyline. Steel remains a major source of employment. However, industrial decline has led to high unemployment rates here.
Aberavon is still dealing with the consequences of its industrial past. There are efforts in place to improve the local environment to attract visitors and make the area a better place to live. Port Talbot's beach area has been upgraded to the extent that it has been awarded Blue Flag status and the beach area is also home to the Kite Tail, the largest sculpture in Wales.
