Description | Vice President Sherman died on 10/30/1912. The Republican Party did not have time to select a replacement candidate before the election. [New York Times 11/4/1912]
Pres. Taft and Republican Party leaders met in NYC on 11/4/1912. At that time, they decided to call another meeting of the national committee on 11/12/1912 (after the election) to officially name their VP candidate.
The 24 party leaders took a poll at the time as to which men they preferred:
Gov. Herbert S. Hadley MO - 18
John Wanamaker PA - 2
Others - 4
The New York Times did not carry a story about the meeting where Butler was chosen as the replacement candidate. |
