Description | President Roosevelt faced only one opponent in the Democratic primaries of 1936 (apart from two favorite son candidates in California). Henry S. Breckinridge, an anti-New Deal attorney from New York City, offered himself as a test of the President's popularity in the Democratic Party. Roosevelt scored a wide victory in all states except one. In New Jersey, Roosevelt did not file for the preference primary, though he did enter candidates for delegate. Breckinridge won New Jersey with 81% of the vote against Roosevelt, who won 19% of the vote with write-ins. Roosevelt's candidates for delegate swept the primary. In his other primaries, Breckinridge performed best in Maryland, where the recently deceased Gov. Ritchie's supporters voted for him. Roosevelt won that primary by an 83-15 margin. |
