DescriptionBBC Profile:
Up until 1979 the constituency saw a succession of Labour victories, but in that year Jocelyn Cadbury took the seat for the Conservatives on a 10% swing. After Cadbury's death in 1982, a by-election saw John Spellar win the seat for Labour. He was beaten at the 1983 general election by the Conservative Party candidate, Roger King. He held the seat for nine years but in 1992 was defeated by Labour's Richard Burden, who has held the seat since.

At the election, the boundary changes see the constituency gain parts of Kings Norton, Northfield and Weoley from Birmingham Selly Oak. The loss of part of Bourneville narrowed its elongated upper corridor. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Birmingham Northfield is located to the south of the city.

Traditionally its lifeblood was car manufacturing, specifically the Rover plant at Longbridge. Its closure has hit the area hard.
