Description | Ron Sims formally resigned his office May 8 to take office as deputy secretary of Housing & Urban Development in DC. His chief of staff, Kurt Triplett, will take over his duties until the county council appoints a replacement. The council will choose from Triplett, former county councilmembers Steve Hammond & Louise Miller, and former Seattle mayor Charles Royer. All are being considered in a caretaker role and aren't seeking the office on the fall ballot.
A selection committee co-chaired by former Seattle Mayor Norm Rice [D] and current Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke [R] interviewed all four candidates and 10 of the 16 committeemembers recommended the council appoint Charley Royer. Five of the committeemembers recommended Kurt Triplett. Before the vote on the applicants, Louise Miller announced her support of Royer as he had the support of a majority of the selection committee. In the end, Triplett won the support of a majority of councilmembers, 6-3, with councilmembers Bob Ferguson, Jane Hague, and Kathy Lambert voting against. Ferguson had previously called for a vote on Royer, who was his preferred applicant. After the vote the full council voted for Triplett in order to have him selected unanimously. |
