Description | Aso won the lower house vote over Ozawa by a margin of 337-117, while Ozawa won the upper house vote 125-108. The constitution of Japan states that if both houses of the Diet are split as to who will become the next prime minister, the wishes of the people's house (lower) will be respected.
The upper house vote was won in a runoff as Ozawa failed to secure a majority of votes in the first round. This container combines votes only from the winning round in both houses, hence any votes earned by minor party leaders in the first round of the upper house vote are not included. |
