Description | In the July 1852 general election the Whigs won the popular vote by a wide margin but narrowly fell behind the Conservatives in the seat count. The Earl of Derby formed a protectionist minority government that quickly fell as Peelites in the Conservative Party defected to form a free trade coalition with the Whigs. The Earl of Aberdeen, a Peelite, was selected as prime minister, but he would resign before the next election after several scandals surrounding British involvement in the Crimean War. |
