Description | Special election held to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Speaker Colfax so he could prepare to be inaugurated as Vice President on the following day. Pomeroy served the shortest term as Speaker of the House.
Due to the press of business on the last day of the session, Pomeroy was unanimously elected. |
