Description | Court ordered special election to resolve 1997's "too-close-to-call" results in the seventh assembly district.
Since the 1997 General Election was considered invalid, a vacancy was declared by the courts mid-way through the year. New Jersey Election Law specifies that, in case of a vacancy, the party to last hold the seat gets to appoint the successor. Since Republicans Diane Allen and Carmine DeSopo had last won the district's Assembly seats in 1995, Republicans were allowed to appoint someone to fill the vacancy.
They chose 1997's supposed third-place finisher, Ken Faulkner. Faulkner lost the special election to complete his term in a landslide to 1997's supposed second-place finisher, Jack Conners. |
