Description | Hazel Grove was a new constituency created out of neighbouring Cheadle in the 1970s and is a suburban seat lying to the south east of Stockport in Greater Manchester. The former Liberal MP for Cheadle, Dr Michael Winstanley, was immediately able to win Hazel Grove in February 1974 but lost just eight months later in the second election of that year to Tory Tom Arnold. The new MP did well in 1979 but the SDP-Alliance surge in the early 1980s meant that this increasingly became a Liberal/Lib Dem target. They had, however, to wait till 1997 when Tom Arnold stood down before finally capturing the seat on a 12.9% swing. This is a mainly middle-class, largely white - 98% - and affluent, heavily residential area with a high level of owner-occupied housing. The area's traditional cotton industry has now been replaced with light industry and office-based employment. |
