Description | A hotly contested State Senate race is brewing in the traditionally Republican 'Cape & Islands' district. Two-term Senator Robert O'Leary is the first Democrat to hold the seat in over a century, and any plan for Republicans to win back the veto involve recapturing this GOP-leaning seat.
Republicans nominated a strong moderate in Doctor Gail Lese, but she has come under fire from Democrats as being 'air-lifted' from Nahant by Mitt Romney to run on the Cape. Lese, a former Democrat, has invested quite a bit of her own personal money in the race, and is on pace to greatly outspend the incumbent.
Lese is an intelligent, articulate candidate, but Senator O'Leary is perhaps the strongest and most popular Democrat on the Cape -- he almost defeated the immensely popular Henri Rauchenbach back in the 1980s. |
