Description | Center-left party founded by former coup leader and Panamanian "Maximum Leader of the Panamanian Revolution" (aka, president) Omar Torrijos Herrera (October 11, 1968 to 31 July 31, 1981). Torrijos' successor, General Manuel Antonio Noriega, held the office from 1981 until a US invasion ousted his government in December 20, 1989. Party has held almost absolute dominance over Panama's political system since 1968, interrupted only by the US invasion of 1989, which pushed it into opposition until 2004 when its candidate, Martín Torrijos Espino, took the presidency. Party emerged victorious again in 2019 (in coalition with the MOLIRENA party) with the election of Laurentino Cortizo. Party is led by Benicio Robinson [Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD)]. |
