Description | Center-right, socio-liberal party and long-time opponent of statism as advanced and practiced by its rival, the Colorado Party. National is the oldest active party in Uruguay and in all of Latin America. Party was founded by independence leader and 2nd President of Uruguay (established as the Eastern State of Uruguay; Estado Oriental del Uruguay) Manuel Oribe. Oride opposed unitarianism, a variant of Bonapartist movements that advocated for a centralized state, later formulated as batllismo, the government-centric doctrines of José Batlle y Ordóñez, president of Uruguay (1903–1907, 1911–1915), and Colorado Party leader. National identifies with the free enterprise and classical liberal thought which emerged in the 19th century in reaction to statism. Party has been led by Uruguay's 42nd President (since March 1, 2020) Luis Lacalle Pou [Partido Nacional (PN) or Partido Blanco; "White Party"]. |
