| Description | Right-of-center party founded by the 1st president of an independent Azerbaijan, Ayaz Mutallibov (October 18, 1991 - March 6, 1992). Mutallibov held the position of President of the USSR Communist Party Central Committee, and was the last President of the dissolved Azerbaijan SSR. VBP was split in half in 2001 after a skirmish between Mutallibov and party secretary Igbal Agazadeh. Mutallibov held on as leader of the VBP while Agazadeh departed to join the Party of Hope (or Umid Partiyasi), becoming its chairman. The VBP was further undermined when Mutallibov resigned in 2003 to join another party he founded, the Azerbaijan Social Democratic (ASDP). Party chairman became Sabir Hajiyev. Party endured a decade of listlessness and lack of direction. It finally decided to dissolve itself on May 22, 2023 [Vətəndaş Birliyi Partiyasi (VBP)]. |
