Description | Center-right party and the oldest in the Faroe Islands. Party had served until the 1930s as the rival of the Union Party (Smbandsflokkurin) in a two-party system. Party was instrumental in getting Faroese recognized as an official language in 1938 and bringing about home rule, beginning in 1948. Party supports gradualist steps toward Faroe Islands independence and labels itself "based on Christian morality" and "socialliberal." Party has been led by entrepreneur and Klaksvík Mayor Jógvan Skorheim since April 9, 2015. Party holds one seat in the Løgting after legislative elections held on August 31, 2019 [Sjálvstýri (translated as "Self Government") changed in 2019 from Sjálvstýrisflokkurin ("Self Government Party")]. |
