Description | Conservative nativist party and the first established in Vanuatu, known as the colony of New Hebrides at the time. Party has since inception identified with the interests of the indigenous community of Vanuatu, called the Ni-Vanuatu or Ni-Van, who are Melanesian ethnic groups native to Vanuatu. Originally launched by native chiefs, party later became the vehicle for Ni-Van nationalist and Espiritu Santo independence leader Jimmy "Moses" Stevens, who was crushed in 1980 by invading Papua New Guinean forces eager to douse separatism in the newly independent Vanuatu. Stevens was an advocate for the return of "alienated" customary land (undeveloped land) held by foreigners, and founded the ‘Native Company’ for the purpose of agitating for it, which was later renamed the Nagriamel Customs Union. Party still seeks autonomy for Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu's largest island. Party is led by MP Song Keaspai [Nagriamel Movement; Nagriamel Customs Union or Vemerana]. |
