| Description | Right-of-center opposition party launched by 2019 presidential candidate and former vice president (May 31, 2014 – May 24, 2019) under president Peter Mutharika, Saulos Chilima.
Chilima broke with Mutharika and launched his party in 2018 in coalition with former Malawi President Joyce Banda's People's Party, the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) and the Tikonze People's Movement with the aim of presenting a united anti-Mutharika front ahead of the presidential contest of May 21, 2019.
The UTM then joined the Malawi Congress Party to successfully petition the Constitutional Court to nullify the alleged-to-be-rigged May 21, 2019 presidential election.
The Court also reinstated Chilima as Malawi's Vice President on February 3, 2020.
Chilima and the Malawi Congress Party's Lazarus Chakwera later formed the MCP-UTM Alliance which expanded to 8 parties on April 28, 2020. Coalition was renamed the TONSE Alliance.
Chilima agreed to be Chakwera's vice presidential nominee ahead of the July 2, 2020 presidential election. |
