DescriptionThe Anti-Federalist Party was a loose affiliation of opponents of a strong centralized government. It began as the opposition to the adoption of the U.S. Constitution. After the new federal government was established, the Anti-Federalists became the official opposition party. Although it claimed to represent the wishes of the general public, throughout its existence the national party was controlled by southern slave holders.
