Description | Left-wing populist party formerly known as the League of Communists of Serbia, a division of the Communist Party, the sole legal party of the former Yugoslavia, established after WWII in 1945 [Socijalistička partija Srbije (SPS)]
Party was renamed the "Socialist Party of Serbia" in 1990 upon merger of the League of Communists of Serbia, led by Slobodan Milošević, and the Socialist Alliance of Working People of Serbia. Milošević became chairman of the revamped party in 1992 until his death on March 11, 2006.
Party is currently led by Serbia's First Deputy Prime Minister, Ivica Dačić. Party took 21 seats in the Serbian National Assembly in 2016. |
