Description | Center-right, agrarian-interests party vastly diminished since the 2010s after it lost substantial rural support to the reigning Law and Justice (PiS) party. Party began as the Stronnictwo Ludowe (People's Party), changing its name to Polish People's Party in 1903. Party members were executed or forced into exile by the occupying German and Soviet armies during WWWII. Party was subsequently absorbed by the Communist United People's Party on November 27, 1949 and disappeared for a time until the Polish People's Republic was overthrown in 1989. The Polish People's Party re-emerged in 1990 from the United People's Party (ZSL) after the ZSL was banned/dissolved on November 27-29, 1989. Party is led by physician and former minister under President Donald Tusk, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz [Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe (PSL)]. |
