Description | Center-left party supportive of backward caste and women's rights active in the state of Uttar Pradesh, particularly the Varanasi-Mirzapur region. Party was founded by Sonelal Patel, who also co-founded the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 1984 with dalit leader Kanshi Ram. Party was led by Sonelal's widow, Krishna Patel, after Sonelal's death in 2009. Disputes with Krishna Patel's daughter, Anupriya, led to the daughter's expulsion on May 7, 2015 and the subsequent establishment of a rival Apna Dal named after Anupriya Patel's father called Apna Dal (Sonelal) on December 14, 2016. The older Apna Dal was later forced by the ECI to add in '(Kamerawadi)', as in Apna Dal (Kamerawadi), having the initials AD(K), to distinguish it from Apna Dal (Sonelal). |
