| Description | Right-of-center party launched by future President and former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member Joyce Banda (April 7, 2012 to May 31, 2014). Banda was still Vice President (May 29, 2009 – April 7, 2012) after she was expelled on December 13, 2010 from the DPP for refusing to endorse President Bingu Wa Mutharika's brother Peter Mutharika as his successor.
Despite being expelled from the party, Banda took over the presidency after President Bingu Wa Mutharika died in office on April 5, 2012.
Banda was the second woman in history to become president of an African nation. She remains a candidate for the presidency in 2020. |
