PARTY DISSOLVED IN 1980.
A number of South Korean political parties professing the ideology of former president Park Chung-hee have used variations on the name Democratic Republican Party
The original Democratic Republican Party (1963-1980) was founded by Park himself. It was disbanded shortly after the military coup that brought Chun Doo-hwan to power.
Kim Jong-pil, who had served as Prime Minister under Park, founded the New Democratic Republican Party (1987-1990) in order to carry on the original's legacy. It eventually merged with the ruling Democratic Justice Party and the main opposition Democratic Unification Party to form the Democratic Liberal Party. Kim himself, however, left to form the United Liberal Democrats.
Entertainer Huh Kyung-young, the self-proclaimed "second coming of Park Chung-hee," founded his own version, the Republican Party (1997-2000), which was later renamed the Democratic Republican Party (2000-2007), then the Economic Republican Party (2007-2008), then finally, again, the Democratic Republican Party (2008-present). |
