| Description | Right-of-center, Swiss Italian party active in the canton of Ticino and the southern part of Grisons. Party was founded by the late former footballer and businessman Giuliano Bignasca, Mauro Malandra and journalist Flavio Maspoli. Party grew on a platform opposing the "partitocrazia" ("partitocracy" - government held autocratically by less than a handful of political parties) that manouevres to exclude alternative voices in Switzerland. Bignasca had been an admirer of Umberto Bossi and his newly-launched Lega Nord per l'Indipendenza della Padani (Lega Nord) on January 8, 1991 in Italy, and sought to mimic it in Swiss Italy by taking on similar themes. Party was able to pick up a surprising 23 seats in its first cantonal legislative attempt on April 14, 1991, and has consistently placed second in seat strength in the Grand Council of Ticino since 2011. Party is led by Ticino Grand Council deputy Alberti Eolo [Lega dei Ticinesi or Lega]. |
